The Deadline

Apparently there is a deadline out there for every phase of your life. By a certain age you should have your own house, have children and be married. Growing up you aren't aware of this deadline until you start to get up in age and you are approaching that 30+ mark. You start to hear how much you are wasting your life and how much you will end up old and lonely.  I'm now being informed of this deadline at the age of 24 and without even giving it thought it start to plays with your mind. Am I really wasting my life? Then I start to look at these individuals who are reminding me of the deadlines that I'm facing and I realize that many of them have passed these so called deadlines or they aren't happy with the outcome of their lives after meeting these deadlines. We aren't created the same so why are we expected to move at the same speed. What works for someone will not necessarily work for another. Many find the right partner young others have to try a little har

JAMAICA is in a sad state

I haven't blogged in a while but how could I sit aside and not speak on the recent issues affecting my nation. Things happen from time to time that are beyond the control of anyone but our reaction to when these things happens is what shows the metal from which we are made. There in lies the major problem with the leaders of our country. They have little or no proper communication skills and it starts with the prime minister herself. I tune into the news every evening and follow updates on social media sites as it relates to the issues of the country. The prime minister is always more vocal when it comes to showing her power in relation to the opposition but so weak when it comes to the affairs of the country and communicating with the people who she claims to have nothing but love for. As a young lady in Jamaica I'm worried about the future of my nation and what it will be like for my fellow young people. At school we aren't safe, walking home from school we aren't saf

The Bad bitch syndrome

Today, while walking in Spanish town with my mother we came upon a high school student arguing with a older man. The man said to her that she had no manners and the high school student said to him that " if him see manners a give weh a shop". I often address females as ladies on my blog but I didn't address this high school student in that manner. Her behaviour does not qualify her to be called a lady. It worries me that this is a very common behaviour among our children here in Jamaica and the rest of the world. Our children show little or no respect for anyone anymore. They say what they feel and they do what they feel around you. I remember going on a coaster bus one evening and seeing students kissing and feeling up each other around adults. When they were confronted they didn't care to hear any of the warnings of the adults. What examples are we setting for the future of our world? Do parents teach children good manners anymore? In many cases the answer is no bec

Whose dreams are you chasing?

Growing up many of us were encouraged to either become a doctor or a lawyer. These professions were always placed high on a pedestal and we were told that these are the jobs we should aim for. Firstly, I always wondered why the people who encouraged me to choose one of these paths were not working in any of these capacities. I grew up as a child filled with questions and I would question my parents about everything. From a very young age I loved writing and I knew that I wanted to spend my life doing this. My parents on the other hand never encouraged that dream of mind as I was always encouraged to become a lawyer or a doctor.  When I listen to children on our primary and preparatory quiz competitions the most popular professions are lawyer and doctor. We neèd to encourage our children to look at other paths. Many of us will not be able to become a lawyer or doctor either because of finances or because we don't have the intelligence for it. Parents need to realize that everybody i

Do female dancehall entertainers make good role models?

In Jamaica these days calls are coming from call corners for more attention to be placed on our children to ensure that we protect them as best as possible. We should ensure that they get off the streets early, they aren't taken advantage of and that they attend school. However, what about the examples that we set for them? The way we dress, the relationships we keep, the way we talk to each other, shouldn't we be taking a look at that as well? This takes me to our female entertainers and the examples that they set. From a very young age children find a love for music and they easily eat up everything they see and hear. Recently, two of our most popular female entertainers got into an argument on social media for the entire world to see. It wasn't just the fact that they were arguing but it was mostly about the things that they were saying to each other. Everyone has access to the internet and unfortunately children are getting electronic devices at a very young age. The in

The Jamaican Child

Watch them all caught up in them politics! Turn on the news another Jamaican child life has ended too quick Busy making plans for the future they say  While everyday the future is being taking away How can you not cry out when you hear of the death of a child? They drop by and offer words of assurance just for a little while Our little girls are being taken advantage of yet elders continue lust Every day we brace ourselves to hear about more pain reaching our children Yet we remember for a while and we move on with our lives because it's not our child It's so captivating to hear a child laugh yet these men find joy in taking innocence from a child So young, filled with great potential yet at just 12,13,14,15 they are killed before their time More and more parents are burying their children our country is really in reverse No matter how many developments take place in our country we continue to disregard our true worth The most influential minds pretend as if they don't hear

Young Jamaicans with old thinking

I am all about my fellow young people jumping into the ring and showing the world what we have to offer and the changes that we can make once we are given the opportunity to do so. I believe that as the times change around us so too should those who have been in charge of our nation for decades should be changed as well. Our leaders have been given the opportity to forumale change but many have neither tried or they have been unsuccessful therefore a change needs to take place and new faces with new ideas should be able to show what they can bring forward. However, sadly it seems that many young people are simply just young in body but have the same old way of thinking. One would think that they would use their young and sharp minds to come up with new ideas that will help to shape a better Jamaica but instead they allow themselves to be saturated by the same way of political thinking that the country is indeed tired of. If young people are going to step up with the same ideas and t

Are you full?

In these days of social media it's quite easy for people to feel good about themselves and equally as easy for them to feel bad about themselves. It takes a ' like' for someone to feel as if they are good enough and the lack of a ' like' for them to feel as if they aren't good enough. There are those who even go further as to compromise their values and drastically change who they are just to get the required 'likes' to feel as if they are indeed good enough. For some who meet this level of likes they tend to use it as a label to ridicule those who aren't able to meet that level. As we go through each day let us ponder the thought do you still feel good enough after you sign off the internet? Do you feel as if you are achieving your purpose after you aren't able to check on the likes you have received? What would truly matter if the Internet was no longer with us would those who feed your ego still be there? Download my book 'The Voice of Jam

The Government wants what the Government wants

Am I the only one who has come to realize that the only time the government really cares about public opinion is when it comes to election time. The government can't regain power without the help of the public. We as citizen have the power to decide whether or not they are given the chance to further rip our country apart. Why is then that we as citizens fail to see that the power is indeed in our hands. As Jamaicans we are the most vocal people but when it comes to getting up and speaking up for our rights we scared into silence.    When a young government minister can get up and encourage the young minds of the nation to leave the country because of lack of opportunity it certainly speaks volumes. They could care less or not about the fact that employment is so difficult to find. They simply want to send us off so we can be a problem to there nations. To the minister, did you know that the most valuable resource of a nation is its people? Apparently this has slipped your mind o

The Youth

Strong bones and sharp minds  But are the youths strong enough? Do they even have the time? Consumed with reality TV while real life passes them by Are you telling me these are the ones on who we rely? Praises are given to those who have the most gimmicks  How many do you admire with genuine and powerful lyrics? Who am I talking to?  I'm talking to the youth Some know strength but only the strength of their sexual prowess The value of the mind is low on the scale of attractiveness Flashy cars, perfect physique and neatly laid hair parade at the top of the attractiveness scale What are you using your youth for? To simply keep up with the current downfall or be the generation to stand tall? Consumed with the excitement of the times and the obsession with money Pride and morals are put aside at the pursuit of fame and monetary gain What race are you in ? To simply have fame attached to your name or be proud of your name Strong bones become frail when they have no structure Youth so wea

The Fear of Jamaicans

Bright yellow sun you see when your eyes are open No matter how many times I blink my eyes I see bloody skies, bloody sun, bloody hands, bloody guns A wife applied makeup for the bruises left after her husband pierced her delicate flesh unaware that the makeup couldn’t cover the pain that resonated on her heart. A little boy eyes glistens with excitement as he polishes a gun that has just been placed in his hands by the area leader, unaware that he would use it to take the life of his friend. Don’t you feel the fear leave their bodies like steam from a bubbling engine A little girl waves innocently to a man on the corner, unaware that later he would cut out her innocence from its protective shield. I see the fear around as I sweep my gate in the mornings yet some of us have dust on our eyes like the dust on my window ledges.  Our leaders fail to see the roads we walk on paved with dried blood of innocent lives. Three locks on my doors as I protect my fa
