The thoughts of a poet

"From as long as I can remember I've always wanted to write. My mother taught me to read and write very well before I started school. My birthday gifts were always books and I was always thrilled to receive them. I didn't grow up watching a lot of television so even today I'm still behind on shows that people my age group grew up watching.  Like others, during my teenage years I wanted to fit in and I wanted to be seen. Looking back at it now I can just smile at it because of the growth that has brought me to the woman I am now. We all have things that we are passionate about and mine happens to be poetry. It isn't the most glamorous nor is it filled with expensive accolades but it is what I want to do. In the darkest of times in my life poetry has always been there and I can honestly say that if I didn't have my poetry I wouldn't be here today. We live in a world where people do just about anything to be noticed but I rather have my words be memorable and

Wear your natural crown

Growing up many of us were told that our natural crowns weren't beautiful. From a very young age many of us were told to idolize those deemed to have 'pretty hair'. When I speak about natural crown I don't speak about just our beautiful natural hair but our natural way of thinking. It is important to be proud of how we were naturally created by our maker but it is even more important to be proud of our natural way of thinking and to strive to not be corrupted by what society believes to be acceptable. I want to appeal to my young queens that they should never alter their souls to fit in with the norms of society. My queens, be proud of what makes you different and be proud of the natural you. Those who see the beauty in the natural you appreciate them and those that don't simply ignore them and continue on the natural path. We should never have to apologize or change how we were naturally created because we were created for that purpose and we are all naturally beau

It's so easy to be hopeless

So, I haven't shared my thoughts wth you in a while and that's primarily because I was busy working on my latest poetry book which is now available on Amazon. I've always been a lover of poetry but I never believed that I could one day become a really good poet. Today, I'm here to say to you that you should never give up in your dreams. This year I self published two poetry books of which I'm very proud. If I had listened to the doubters and the voices in my head I would have given up on poetry years ago. It's very easy to stop believing in your dreams when the world is fighting against you and telling you that they are pointless or you should choose another path. You were born with the desire to achieve something and you should always work towards it regardless of what the world tells us. I gave up a couple times due to negative feedback so of no feedback so at all but somehow I got up and continued to push. I've improved on my poems more and more each day

A look at love

I once had a friend who grew to be very close to me. Once when we were sitting at the edge of a swimming pool, she filled the palm of her hand with a little water and held it before me, and said this: "You see this water carefully contained on my hand? It symbolizes Love." This was how I saw it: "As long as you keep your hand caringly open and allow it to remain there, it will always be there. Ho wever, if you attempt to close your fingers round it and try to posses it, it will spill through the first cracks it finds. This is the greatest mistake that people do when they meet love...they try to posses it, they demand, they expect... and just like the water spilling out of your hand, Love will retrieve from you. For love is meant to be free, you cannot change its nature. If there are people you love, allow them to be free beings. Give and don't expect. Advise, but don't order. Ask, but never demand. It might sound simple, but it is a lesson that may take a lifetim

Do we expect too much from others?

In our daily life journey interactions  are something that either helps us or breaks us but either way we seem to always be in search of some form of interaction. In recent times, we see more and more posts 'no new friends' 'can't trust anybody' ' world is filled with fake people' but I started to think more deeply into this and came to the conclusion that perhaps we expect too much from people. We expect that our friends will always be there for us that they will always have all the answers to our problems. We feel as if they should never do anything to have us questioning the friendship and things should always be perfect. Do we often forget that they are humans just like us? are we able to provide all the things that we expect from them? We expect that our partner will always be the most romantic, the most understanding, the most loving every single day of the relationship. There are days when I don't even feel like seeing anothe

"Let's do it for the gram"

There are days when I just look back and think to myself are people really as happy as they claim to be or is it just about making it seem like they are. In recent times I've noticed that suicide has been on the increase especially amongst young people. People who we would consider to seem to have it all together and were enjoying life. Before spending so much money to attend events,go to expensive restaurants and hotels you should think about the reasons for which you are doing it. Clearly people are just spending so much money to convince others that their life is perfect when behind all the social media hype their lives are filled with sadness. If people could see through the images you post what would they really see? Many of us do our best to ensure that we have the best equipment to capture the moments in our lives while we allow the essence of the moments to pass us by. After a long vacation the first thing some of us do is ensure that we post all the pictures for people to

Be more thankful

It's so easy for us to complain it's like we do it everyday. Are we more thankful for the blessings we have no matter how small they seem? It seems to me that more than ever people are more ungrateful than they are grateful. No matter how bad things are always remember that they could be much worse. Our house isn't big so we complain rather than be thankful that we have a house. Our pay cheque is small so we complain rather than be thankful that we have a job. Our skin isn't flawless so we complain instead of be thankful that we still have our skin to protect our bodies. Our body isn't sculpted perfectly so we complain instead of being thankful that all our body parts are still functioning. Our world is very ungrateful and we can never seem to be satisfied no matter how many blessings we have. This week I ask of you to be thankful for something everyday no matter how small it may seem.

The Mixture

There is so much pain in the eyes The eyes of a child once shone bright and warmed you inside  So many people are hurting and the answers are nowhere to be found They tell us to keep praying but the pain continues to get worse Children eyes struggle to stay open as they receive their latest cancer dose The inability to play with their friends only brings more tears to their eyes The heat of the sun makes them weak as they try to stand tall to beg for something to eat The inability to smile and share the joy of being a child The guns increase in the streets but nobody knows how them reach Hatred so strong in the hearts of men They put a gun to the head of the young and they feel nothing their hearts are numb The day draws to an end and they tell us pain endures just for awhile How you tell that to a child? Whose father killed his mother then committed suicide leaving him behind The young man works hard to bring home money to take care of his wife and child He is held up on his way from

Friendships

Friendships and relationships continue to suffer due to the journey for perfection. People enhance their bodies on the journey to what they view as perfection. People seek knowledge of certain things in order to achieve perfect intellect. This journey towards perfect leaves us from time to time to believe that others around us must themselves step up and be perfect or they no longer fit into our perfect lives. Believe it or not those friends who falter from time to time will help you to either learn from their mistakes or they will inspire you when they overcome the mishaps. As friends we can't drop those who maybe aren't able to keep up with the speed at which we are reaching the end our journeys. Often times I see quotes that speak about drop those who aren't going anywhere behind and go after your dreams. However, we have to make sure that we don't drop those who are progressing but aren't yet at perfection.
