The Young are being murdered

The death of the young
By:©Saccheen Laing

I put on my uniform
Armed with books I set out in search of a good education.
Streets lined with the blood stains of those who fell on the way
I'm determined to live to see another day
But I have no control over those who believe they can have their own way.
Armed with guns and knives
They attack me,
They assault me,
They abuse me ,
Because they believe they have control over me
Because of guns and knives in hand.
In my hands I write my plans
A singer, an actor, a doctor, a fashion designer or a police man
I clench my fist as my blood runs to join those who fell before
My plans remain in my hands
Never to be realized
I am young but that means nothing on this land.
The blood of the young will replace the ocean that surrounds and beautifies the land
How many more shall die before you answer when I ask why?
My mother shall cry and bury her son before he becomes a man
My brother shall cry and say goodbye to his role model
My father shall cry and say goodbye to the son he wanted to educate and nurture
My sister shall cry and say goodbye to the brother who would protect and love her
My blood flows and you stop to record it
My blood flows and you walk over it
My blood flows and you forget it

A girl murdered, never to become a woman
A boy murdered, never to become a man
Who will be the next generation? When the young are being murdered

Church ministry without God

Have you ever been to a church service and when the singers are singing you feel nothing? You can hear the words coming out of their mouths but they have no  conviction whatsoever? Music is one of the most important parts of church ministry and if God isn't in it, it shouldn't be called Gospel music to begin with. Some singers in church sing for self! They know they are blessed with beautiful voices so they use the church to showcase it but it isn't about ministry. It is simply to let people know what they have going on. They stand before you and they have blank expressions on their faces, while they sing such powerful lyrics. They aren't moved by it but they somehow expect that the congregation will be. The next issue is that of the modern day Gospel music. Call me old fashion but it isn't my flavour at all. Why should I have to be wondering whether I'm listening to Gospel or I'm at a dancehall event? Why does the church have to change itself to resemb...

Be more thankful

It's so easy for us to complain it's like we do it everyday. Are we more thankful for the blessings we have no matter how small they seem? It seems to me that more than ever people are more ungrateful than they are grateful. No matter how bad things are always remember that they could be much worse. Our house isn't big so we complain rather than be thankful that we have a house. Our pay cheque is small so we complain rather than be thankful that we have a job. Our skin isn't flawless so we complain instead of be thankful that we still have our skin to protect our bodies. Our body isn't sculpted perfectly so we complain instead of being thankful that all our body parts are still functioning. Our world is very ungrateful and we can never seem to be satisfied no matter how many blessings we have. This week I ask of you to be thankful for something everyday no matter how small it may seem.

The Jamaica of tomorrow

When shall the change come? Crime and violence ago continue and mash up Jamdung? Street lights come on at night and our window lids we shut tight tight No kids on the street, no time to meet and greet Why can't we no longer walk at nights? Why we don't have no peace? Police men guard the streets  Kids run quickly pass them not sure if they police or just undercover gunman and thief Thousands complete their university education but student loan awaits them in every gleaner publication Jamaica is such a beautiful nation, nice food and nuff happiness and sweet jubilation Wait a moment and turn the  TV off the international station Turn the dial to our local station No more happiness and sweet jubilation Blood flowing in the streets of poverty and ever increasing destruction You have the answers? Tell us how we need a change in politics Five years time and we still have the same corruption  You tell me to smile because better must come I ...
